How long after a job interview should I wait before I give up?

Can you answer j.mcintire’s question about Careers?:

I had a fantastic job interview two weeks ago today. After the interview, the hiring manager said he would send me some information for our final interview. At that point, I told him I wouldn’t be available until the 26th of May (tomorrow). He said “okay” and walked away.

I haven’t heard anything from them at all. I called the recruiter who works at the company and left her a voicemail asking for the hiring manager’s contact information so I could send him a “thank you” letter. She did not return my call, so I emailed her about five days ago. Nothing.

I’m starting to think I didn’t get the job. Should I just move on, or should I wait? The interview was OUTSTANDING, so I felt really really good about this opportunity.

Thanks!

Careers Feedback: try to call one more time. i would think if they were going to hire you they would be making contact.

Careers Feedback: I would say to move on and try find something else, but keep them in mind. I did a job interview and didn’t hear anything for two years. It turned out that right after my inmterview they had to go on a hiring freeze. As soon as it was over they called me and I have now been there for two years.

Careers Feedback: Keep prodding until you get some closure. Many times yout information gets lost in the “shuffle”. If you didn’t get the job you can’t make it any worse by pursuing it until you get a definitive answer. The only danger you run is anooying them if they’re still in the decision making process. But it sounds like your waited a suffificent amount of time. Keep trying to elicit closure.

Careers Feedback: If they do not contact you by tomorrow, then consider it a lost cause. Even though the job interview may have been viewed as fantastic, they could have found another candidate with more experience or a better resume and hired him instead. Sorry to say that, but it happens so often.

Careers Feedback: You have every right to send him an email or make a phone call to ask what your status is. They should be professional enough to give you that information.

If they say they decided on another candidate, you can ask what made them choose someone over you. It will only help you.

Perhaps they’ve had trouble contacting you. It will show initiative and follow through if you complete the process.

Considering you’ve done many of these things, alas, you can move on.

Careers Feedback: Usually about 2 weeks. Many times, the employer needs to make a decision and has to compare many candidates. If they haven’t contacted you, I would call to check, but call only once, or you will sound desperate. If they don’t call back, it’s because they don’t want you, and they are too rude to send a letter of rejection in the mail. Keep your options open and keep looking for a job. We do a lot of interviews at my workplace, and we tell everyone we are very pleased with them, but that really doesn’t mean anything.

Careers Feedback: I hate that - sometimes employers make you feel like the interview went well. I actually was told I had a job by this place about two weeks ago - he sent me to a clinic for my drug test on a Wednesday and said it may be Monday but he wanted me to start “as soon as the drug test came back” — so I called him on that Monday a.m. and he said the test came back clean (dah - I knew it would) but that he had another candidate in mind at that time. I thought for sure I had the job and just hung out on Thursday and Friday since I was done job hunting. So I went back out and had a “GREAT” interview with another place and received a letter that the intereview was great and my resume is outstanding but they went with another candidate. I don’t trust employers that much at this point. I finally have a job - not real sure how excited I am but lost too much time and $$$ — need to survive somehow. It sucks. I think I would move on. BUT GOOD LUCK AND MAYBE IT WASN’T MEANT TO BE. Maybe God is looking over you and the place seemed great but there could be horrible people working there and you wouldn’t know until you were in. Try to look at the bright side.

Careers Feedback: We do lots of interviews at my company and if the hiring managers are impressed by your skills and wit they WON’T forget about you and probably will call you back within a week at most.

Two weeks is a LONG time in the business world friend.

Careers Feedback: As a current HR Mgr., my first question would be to you, is this your dream job or just a good job, but not really a long-term commitment? If it’s your job of a lifetime, then you need to be a little more assertive in your attempts to contact the hiring manager. Don’t use the phone, go in-person. It’s alot harder to avoid you if you’re waiting in the reception area.

Also, the hiring manager may be waiting for you to contact him after the 25th. So make sure you make every attempt possible to make contact. As far as the recruiter, you need to contact his/her direct supervisor and discuss the difficulties you have experienced with the recruiter. They are there to provide both you and the business where you interviewed staffing support. It doesn’t sound like they are fulfilling their end of the deal. Good Luck!!
